Portrait of a former yogini dancer: Tatiana Arias
Tatiana Arias was born in the city of Cannes, France. Her interest in working with the body and movement began at a young age since at the age of 7 she was already participating in rhythmic gymnastics competitions. She then moved on to classical dance in which she decided to make a career, which led her to New York.
It was in this city that she discovered the Merce Cunningham International School, where she trained for 2 years. Then, after a stint in a few New York dance companies, she fell in love with Vinyasa yoga, a beautiful encounter that allowed her to release the pressures of dance.
After an intense and daily practice with the best yoga teachers (Isaac Peña, Matt Giordano, etc.), Tatiana trained to teach Vinyasa yoga at the Sonic Yoga school (RYT 200) in 2012. The same year, after teaching in a few schools, she decided to return to France.
It was in Paris that her career really began. She currently teaches in many Parisian centers and represents several brands. At the same time, she continues to train at the New York school Laughing Lotus, which strongly influences her teaching as well as with Bryce Yoga.
Since 2016, Tatiana has also been training yoga teachers in Paris.
It was only natural that I asked him a few personal questions about his yoga practice, which I am sharing with you today.
How did you get into taking care of yourself?
I was a professional dancer in NYC and taking care of myself was really not on my to-do list. However after a painful breakup in NYC in 2010 and some health problems that happened at the same time I told myself that it was time to take care of myself! And seeing all these people walking around with their yoga mats in NYC I told myself that I had to try :) I quickly became addicted to yoga and little by little I realized that taking care of yourself was inevitable.
What practice for your well-being?
Vinyasa yoga but also just taking a little time each week to take care of myself, especially by taking a bath at the end of my week and finally going regularly to a place where I can practice yoga easily and eat healthy: the best way to recharge my batteries :)
What is the ritual of your practice?
I have a fairly physical practice and my little ritual to feel good and to stay a minute on my hands. In addition I can't do without music so I turn up the sound to practice it puts me in a good mood :)
What do you get out of it?
Incredible well-being, even if I'm tired and I can't be bothered to practice, I know that I'll only feel better afterwards.
What do you carry in your yoga bag?
My yoga mat, leggings and a bra :)
What is your favorite object/accessory?
My yoga wheel and my mat
What would be your advice for Tayrona Yoginis?
I advise all yogis to take care of themselves as much as possible, especially in our very active lives, and to have a regular practice; 30 minutes a day is better than 1.5 hours a week.
Where/how do you practice?
When I'm in Paris I have a pretty intense schedule, between private, business, yoga teacher training, studio classes... so I practice a lot at home either alone or with an internet platform. So I know that I need to go away to practice fairly regularly and also to keep up with the intense pace of Paris, so I head to Los Angeles or NYC to recharge my batteries in my practice.
What is your mantra/favourite phrase?
Wherever you go, leave a little spark behind you
