What yoga equipment should I bring to a group class?
The perfect yogi’s checklist in the studio!
During a group yoga class, yoga accessories are often essential for your comfort or in case of lack of flexibility. Why? In order not to injure yourself. Of course, the yoga teacher or the studio can provide all the equipment for yoga . However, it is preferable to use your own yoga equipment for hygiene reasons, but also because it accompanies you in your practice like an ally, in particular the yoga mat . In this article, we tell you which accessories to bring. But, you do not have to take everything. Indeed, it depends on your flexibility, as for the brick and the strap. Do not hesitate to ask your teacher what you need.
The yoga mat, your spiritual space
The yoga mat is one of the essentials in the art of yoga. It becomes a real spiritual space to unite your body and mind. Sometimes it is provided, but it is better to have your own non-slip yoga mat . Choose it according to the type of yoga (gentle or more dynamic), the material, the thickness (comfort), the size and the design. There are yoga mats made of Oeko-Tex certified PVC , natural rubber or TPE. If you have fragile joints and back, we recommend a thicker mat (between 4.5 and 6 mm). Our advice, prefer a travel yoga mat to transport it more easily to the studio. Still don't know which organic yoga mat to choose? Read the buying guide to choose your yoga mat .
The meditation cushion for comfortable relaxation
The meditation cushion (also called zafu) provides you with comfort during seated meditation (lotus posture) at the end of a yoga session. Indeed, you will stay in the same position for a few minutes without moving. It's better to meditate when you don't have ants in your pants! Here too, it can be provided, but it is more hygienic to have your own yoga accessory . Round, rectangular or half-moon shaped, choose it according to your size, your body shape, the flexibility of your pelvis and your comfort preferences. Often, the zafu is filled with buckwheat (firm), kapok (soft) or spelt which are eco-friendly materials. Discover our meditation cushion buying guide to find the one that's right for you!
The yoga blanket to cover yourself during meditation
The yoga blanket is a plus so as not to be cold during seated meditation or Savasana, at the end of the session. But also, you can use it as a yoga cushion , but also as support during certain postures. The yoga blanket is not provided for the course. Prefer materials such as cotton or recycled wool for an eco-responsible purchase. If you do not want to bother taking a blanket, you can just as easily put on a comfortable sweater.
The yoga brick for those of you who lack flexibility
There are 2 types of yoga bricks : the standard size and the special candle. What is it used for? To support your torso, hands or feet in order to maintain good stability when performing certain postures and stretches. This is a plus when you lack flexibility. Note that this yoga equipment is sometimes provided by your teacher. Otherwise, opt for a cork or EVA foam yoga block for optimal grip, especially if you practice dynamic yoga. Depending on your body type, choose XL size yoga equipment . Read our buying guide to choose a yoga brick .
The yoga strap, an extension of your arms
Just like the brick, the yoga strap is useful when you are not very flexible. 2.50 m long with a metal buckle, it will perfectly extend your arms, especially when stretching. In addition, you can carry your soul mat with this yoga equipment ! Be careful, do not use the strap provided with your mat! In order not to burn your skin, we advise you to opt for a strap made of cotton or recycled material. Browse our yoga strap buying guide to make the right choice.
