What is a mala?

Malas are beautiful necklaces made of 108 beads that Buddhists and Hindus have used for centuries for meditation. It is used to count mantras (Sanskrit prayers) in groups of 108 repetitions. Reciting a mantra is used as a form of meditation.

According to the yoga tradition, a mantra is a Sanskrit word or phrase that has special powers that transform consciousness, satisfy desires, or promote healing.

Do you know how to use a Mala?

Start by sitting comfortably with your eyes closed and repeat the mantra silently or out loud depending on your preference. Then focus on the mantra, release your thoughts and breathe slowly and deeply.
One should hold the Mala in one's right hand and use one's thumb to "count" each mantra by touching a bead during the recitation. Push it gently once the mantra is completed and then move on to the next bead. The index finger should be extended and should not touch the Mala. The large bead (called the "guru" bead) should not be counted or touched by the thumb and serves as the starting and ending point for the recitation. Continue pulling the beads as you recited and then start again in the opposite direction as you go back to the guru. Continue until you have done 108 repetitions, or a multiple of 108.

How to energize the mala ?

In order to energize your mala, the mantra used, mantra meditation should be done every day for a period of 40 days in a row. When the mala becomes energized, it can be worn or placed lightly on yourself or someone else to transmit the energy of the mantra, but also the energetic qualities of the mala.

When you are not using your mala, store it in a special place for you, preferably clean and sacred. The best place to store a Mala is either on a personal altar or on a statue of a deity (Buddha, Ganesha, Shiva, Tara, etc.).
