Chakras are invisible energy centers in the body, seven in number, which help to maintain harmony between body and mind. The solar plexus chakra is the third, located at the bottom of the ribs under the tip of the sternum. However, it can become unbalanced due to stress in particular. Kundalini Yoga is one way, among many others, to re-harmonize this energy center.

Meaning of the solar plexus chakra

The solar plexus chakra , named Manipura in Sanskrit, is represented by a lotus with 10 yellow petals. This energy center is located three fingers wide above the navel at the front and at the level of the dorsal vertebrae D11 and D12 at the back. It radiates from front to back and is oriented horizontally.

Manipura, associated with the mental body, represents self-esteem, personality, will, instinct, interpersonal relationships, contact with the outside and social identity. In Kundalini yoga, it is the place of sorting the energies which are redistributed to the other chakras.

This energy center allows the balance of food digestion, thoughts and emotions facilitating decision-making, self-esteem and self-confidence. The solar plexus chakra is the initiator of the quality of relationships with others.

What are the manifestations of a balanced solar plexus chakra ?

When the solar plexus chakra is harmonized, you have self-confidence and the will to achieve your goals, not hesitating to multitask. You are someone who is joyful, warm, zen, open and spontaneous. Respect for others and yourself is important. Your emotions flow smoothly without you worrying about your image.

What are the signs of an imbalanced solar plexus chakra ?

Solar plexus chakra too open

An overly open solar plexus chakra can make you proud, vain, rigid, perfectionist, hateful, angry and obsessed with work, diets and food. You tend to be bossy, irritable, hyperactive, dissatisfied, lacking interest and attention for others. Controlling, being right, manipulating and demonstrating everything are part of your concerns while being disrespectful and impolite. Finally, you are overwhelmed by emotions not knowing how to manage them which can lead to liver disorders (eg cirrhosis), pancreas and digestive disorders (eg gastritis, vomiting, diarrhea).

Closed solar plexus chakra

The closed solar plexus chakra appears when you do not let your emotions express themselves. This leads to a lack of fighting spirit, ambition, assertiveness and self-confidence. You have difficulty saying "no", showing yourself off, acting, deciding and finding your place. Shyness, self-effacement, submission, nervousness, indecision, worry and mistrust are part of your daily life. You need the approval of others while keeping quiet about your own desires because you are afraid of judgment. At the first obstacle, you easily abandon your projects and you do not feel able to face your responsibilities. All this can cause digestive disorders, ulcers and even cancer.
